Rockford, IL (December 10, 2019) – The victim who succumbed to her injuries related to a fire at the Great Oaks Apartment complex on December 5. The victim was identified by Winnebago County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday, December 10, as Tamera Adams, 60.

The fire took place early in the morning hours on December 5, and firefighters were on the scene by 6:30 a.m. working to put out the flames. The fire was so devastating that there were reports of families throwing their children off of their balconies to rescue them from the fire. The fire which took place in the apartment complex off Linden Road quickly engulfed the building.

Efforts made by many surrounding fire departments assisted the Cherry Valley Fire Department to put out the blaze and help rescue others stranded in the building. As a result of the massive fire, firefighters rescued at least four people from balconies and one firefighter suffered minor burns in the process. Six apartments were destroyed and Adams lost her life. She was pronounced dead at 7:55 a.m.

After the devastating fire was put out a gas leak occurred which prompted crews to shut off utilities as a safety measure. The cause of the apartment fire is still unknown.

The authorities are investigating.
