According to authorities with the Rockford Police Department, the incident began when two vehicles were racing each other. One of the vehicles ran a red light and crashed into a third vehicle in the intersection.
There were many injuries reported as a result of the crash and many of the victims were transported by Rockford EMS to the local area hospital. The types of injuries sustained and their severity have not been confirmed.
The accident scene was scattered with a lot of debris on the road. RPD have asked the public to avoid the area while the cleanup and investigation continue.
