Janesville, IL (December 27, 2019) – A car crashed into a tree on Thursday morning, one day after Christmas. Two Janesville males were inside as confirmed by the Rock County Sheriff’s Office news release.

The accident took place in the early morning hours on Thursday at approximately 12:01 a.m. according to the report. Both men were fatally injured as a result of the crash which was located in the 3400 block of West Rockport Road in the town of Janesville.

Witnesses to the fatal accident say that the car was a 2008 blue Chevrolet Cobalt. The driver was a 19-year-old Janesville man and he and another male passenger were traveling east on Rockport Road. Upon encountering another vehicle approaching in the westbound lanes, the Cobalt swerved right to avoid it. The Cobalt then went off the road and hit a tree.

Both the driver and a 20-year-old male passenger were pinned inside the car after it collided with the tree. The men were pronounced dead at the scene. Extractions were needed to pry the men from the vehicle.

The seriousness of the crash and the number of first responders necessary closed West Rockport Road until 3 a.m. The sheriff’s office accident reconstruction team is still investigating the details of the fatal accident, according to the release.

The identities of the victims have not been released.
