The Rock County Sheriff described the incident which happened during the height of the rush hour commute at 6:01 p.m. on West Highway 81 by West Beloit Newark Road.
A male driving a Toyota attempted to pass another vehicle but hit a red Mazda SUV instead. The collision was head-on. The driver of the SUV was confirmed to be a 20-year-old man and he suffered serious injuries. He required transportation to a hospital in Janesville.
The crash resulted in a 6-hour shutdown of all the lanes and rerouting of traffic for West highway 81 between West Beloit Newark Road and South County Highway K. The Rock County Highway Department was on the scene to set up a detour route.
The Rock County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team and the Rock County Sheriff are still investigating the details of the crash.
According to the Medical Examiner’s Office, the name of the 62-year-old deceased man will be released pending notification to the family.
